The stress-cortisol-inflammation loop
This is where it connects back to allostatic load. A 2025 study using transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation found that stimulating the vagus nerve measurably reduced cortisol release triggered by mental stress, with the authors noting this pathway may help explain why chronically stressed people often show both elevated cortisol and a blunted ability of that cortisol to actually control inflammation over time.
Put together, the pattern researchers keep finding is this: stress doesn't just feel bad, it appears to quiet the exact nerve pathway your body relies on to keep inflammation in check. That's a very different story from "stress is in your head," and it's a big part of why allostatic load researchers treat chronic stress as a whole-body variable rather than a purely psychological one.

Where this research is heading, and where it isn't yet
Non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation is being studied fairly seriously right now, with trials looking at conditions ranging from rheumatoid arthritis to inflammatory bowel disease. That's a meaningfully different category from at-home wellness devices marketed loosely under the same name. Clinical VNS research typically involves controlled stimulation parameters and direct comparison against a real intervention. A consumer gadget claiming to "activate your vagus nerve" is operating in much softer territory, and the honest answer is that the evidence for most of those products hasn't caught up to the claims on the packaging yet.
What's actually worth doing with this
You don't need a device to influence vagal tone. Slow, extended exhale breathing, cold exposure, and even singing or humming have real, if modest, research support for nudging vagal activity in a favorable direction. None of these are dramatic interventions, and none of them are a substitute for addressing the actual sources of chronic stress in your life. But they pair naturally with the kind of trend-watching we described in our piece on wearables: a rested night followed by slow-breathing practice is exactly the kind of pattern that shows up in HRV data over time.
